Production and installation belong here as part of the work rather than as the goal: the main task is to preserve the design decisions and verify that the routes actually work once installed. Acceptance is done by walking the routes with people seeing the building for the first time, not by reconciling a delivery note.

Where designs are usually lost
Between an approved design and a working environment sits a chain of decisions, each of which looks harmless on its own. A material is swapped for a more available one and the contrast drops. A carrier is hung ten centimetres lower because it is easier to fix there, and it ends up behind the queue. A layout is «simplified a little» to suit the equipment, and legibility goes with it.
There is a second, non-physical category of loss. The carriers are made exactly to the design, but the glossary never reaches the call centre and the cue scenario never reaches the queue system. Then the very gap the work was for stays exactly where it was: people still get three different names for one room.
How control works
Before the run starts, a sample of each carrier type is signed off. The sample is checked not on a table but in conditions close to the real ones: at the intended distance and under the lighting the building actually has. A material that reads beautifully in the workshop can become a mirror under specific fittings.
Installation follows the placement plans, with heights and viewing angles verified. In parallel the non-physical part is rolled out: the glossary goes into the digital channels and into staff scripts. Once the work is complete the routes are walked again by people seeing the building for the first time — the criterion being that they reach their destination without asking staff.
Briefing the staff
Systems degrade in predictable ways: someone prints an A4 notice and tapes it over a sign, someone moves a freestanding unit out of the way, someone orders a new plate in an arbitrary style, someone invents a new informal name for a department.
So at the end of the stage we hand over the rules: where temporary notices go, who owns wayfinding accessibility, how to order a new signal that fits the system, and how to rename a zone without breaking its link to the digital channels. It is the cheapest part of the work and one of the most significant for how long the system lasts.
Frequently asked questions
Can the system be rolled out in phases?
Yes, and for large buildings it is standard practice. The only requirement is that phases are split by route, not by carrier type: a fully equipped route works, whereas a building with ceiling signs everywhere and no door signs anywhere works nowhere.
Does the building have to stop operating during installation?
Usually not. The main work is done outside opening hours, and anything requiring access to rooms is scheduled. For medical and transport facilities the installation schedule is normally agreed separately.
What if rooms move a year from now?
The design allows for interchangeable elements wherever change is likely: label pockets, replaceable inserts, modular fields. That costs more up front and considerably less at the first rearrangement. The procedure for making such a change is described in the operating rules.
How do we accept the work if we are not wayfinding specialists?
By walking the routes. Take a few people who have never been to the building, give them real tasks from the scenarios and see whether they reach their destination without asking staff. It is a check that needs no expertise, and it tells you more than any reconciliation against a specification.
